RW DNA Study

RW DNA Study

Postby earlyriser62 » Fri Mar 13, 2009 7:16 am

In order to document the genetic history of the Red Wattle Hog Breed, ALBC, Cordoba University are offering RW breeders the opportunity to participate in this DNA study at no cost to the breeder. We encourage all RW breeders to participate as this DNA study is important to the recovery and sustainability of Red Wattles.

Procedure for hair collection to be used for DNA testing:

For each animal:
1. Collection site: On the back behind the head

2. Clean area (use a brush if possible) to remove loose hair and foreign matter.

3. PULL ( Do Not Cut!) 20-40 hair strands. Grasp hair close to skin and pull (use tweezers if hair is short). Examine the end of each hair strand for presence of root bulbs. Hair roots are necessary for DNA testing. Discard any hair strands without root bulbs. Continue to pull hairs until you have 20-40 stands with intact root bulbs.

4. Hair samples should be placed in a clean envelope, sealed and labeled with the animal’s name, registration number, date of collection, location of animal (address), name of owner, color of animal, color of sire, and color of dam.

5. Take a photo of the animal that has been collected, label with animal’s name and registration number and send it with the sample so that we may use it in conjunction with the hair sample during the DNA analysis.

REPEAT STEPS 1-5 for each animal ***Be sure to clean hands and tweezers between each animal sampled.

FINALLY:
Be sure all of the information is filled out correctly on the envelopes and return them to:

Is this DNA study still ongoing? I'm new to the RWHA and would like to ensure good lineage tracking and nothing says "for certain" like DNA.

At this current time we do not have DNA available . We are working on it. Members had another opportunity to pull hairs , but that ended March 1, 2013. Keep checking back on the forum . Any new updates will be posted here. :D

You can always do parentage testing with DNA on your own. We have done it in the past when we had a baby boar start acting a bit more mature then he ought to have been acting so we were not 100% positive on the parentage of a sales piglet. We tested all pigs involved and went from there before we sold the piglet in question. UC at Davis does genetic testing. It doesn't cost all that much and if you send in hair from the supposed sire, the dam and the exact piglet (it can not be just one of the litter mates, it must be THE piglet you want verification on), then they can tell you if the parents are in fact the parents.

I don't have their website off hand, but you can do a search for it and find it easily enough. Happy hair pulling!!

The last hair pulling test was to try to isolate the genotype of the Red Wattle by process of elimination...trying to find out what DNA that all of the hair had in common. If they can find this out, samples of animals in question should be able to be tested to see what percentage of Red Wattle gene that that particular animal carries. Parentage testing is a great idea if you are buying or selling an animal. It would be a great way to make sure that the pig you are getting is out of the parents that they are supposed to be out of. The testing that we were talking of in that post though, the DNA to find the genotype is not yet available and probably won't be for some time as it takes quite a bit of time and funding for this is not very consistant.
Wendy, if you find the contact information on the parentage testing would you post this for people who want to use it? Thanks! :)
