Board of Directors meeting April 21, 2012

Postby redwattles » Tue May 01, 2012 12:55 pm

Present via teleconference were: Jim Parker, Kathy Bottorff, Larry Sorrel and Cindy Huggins. Jan Black was absent.
Kathy informed the board that she had not expected to have previous minutes available and they were not close at hand. They have since been printed and are located in a binder with the annual meeting minutes.
The board agreed to investigate the possibility of adding the card grading system score to individual registered hogs on the website. Kathy will work with Doug Meyer on the feasibility.
It was agreed to work on obtaining close up pictures of individual hog body parts at various ages to begin putting together a teaching pamphlet for our website that will work in conjunction with the breed standard guidelines and card grading systems. Cindy will look into the legalities of obtaining and posting pictures.
Discussion followed regarding the closing of the Recovery Program and possibility of losing "old" genetics. It was decided that Kathy, working with ALBC and the RWHA membership would locate members using the recovery program that may have "old" or historical genetics in their herds and the possibility of an exception from the exclusion when the recovery program ends Jan. 01, 2013.
The board agreed the population is now to the point that the breed standards and registration requirements can be tightened and more firm.
Discussion followed on the placement of wattles and it is agreed that 2 well-formed symmetrical wattles well-attached to the lower inside jowl area (corner) are a requirement to register. This requirement is immediate and in effect for all programs.
Disussion followed regarding number of teats as a requirement to register and it is agreed that 12 (twelve) well placed, uniform and functional teats are now a requirement to register. This requirement statement will be placed on the pedigree registration form and made available on our website. This requirement is immediaate and in effect for all programs.
The board discussed the various descriptions of ears, and the difficulty in determining ear type at young ages. They discussed different positions and shapes of ears from birth to adulthood and what the adult red wattle ear should look like. Per the associations guidelines the hog should have control of the ears at all ages. It is permissible at a young piglet age they stand straight up like a german shepherd dogs' or they are bent forward and flop but still under control. Once the hog reaches maturity (around 6 months of age) the texture should be firm and placement should be cupped over the eye similar to the brim of a baseball cap or visor while still having the ability to raise or lower the ear. The hog must have control of the ears. Cindy has agreed to obtain sketches of pictures of hogs at different ages to place on our website for examples.
The board then discussed the possibility of increasing the required amount to register a hog through ALBC. Discussion was also posed to create a position within the RWHA to administer the registry directly through the association. These items were tabled for further discussion.
This concluded the meeting and Jim Parker moved to adjourn with Larry Sorrel seconding the motion.
Meeting Adjourned.
